In 1943, Richard James invented the Slinky – by accident. James was working on a spring that could be used by the Navy to help keep sensitive shipboard instruments steady at sea. When he knocked some of his experimental springs off a shelf, the inventor was amused by the way they “walked” to the ground. When the Navy chose not to use his spring, James decided to market it as a toy.
A slinky at rest has stored, or “potential” energy. When it is pushed (down a flight of stairs, for example) it becomes subject to the effects of gravity. Its potential energy is then converted to the energy of motion – or kinetic energy – and the Slinky gracefully tumbles down the stairs.
